Spieth says he won Tour Championship with his head (Reuters)

By Larry Fine

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Jordan Spieth identified his heart rather than his swing as the reason he was able to cap off a Player of the Year season by winning the Tour Championship and FedExCup playoffs jackpot on Sunday.

"I didn't feel comfortable striking the ball whatsoever, today or this week," Spieth told reporters after collecting $1.485 million for winning the tournament and $10 million for finishing on top of the FedExCup standings at East Lake.

"It was amazing that we competed with the way I felt over the ball."

Spieth, mature well beyond his 22 years, credited his double victory to his vaunted short game, a burning desire to finish the season on a high and a fresh mental approach underlined by his caddie.

"My short game was phenomenal this week," said the Texan, who in Saturday's third round missed nine greens but saved par each and every time, and bailed himself out with a series of pressure-packed, par-saving putts.

"We worked a lot on it from Monday morning, getting ready for any kind of position. We played the smart shot, struck them the right way, and hit good solid putts. It was incredible."

Spieth dominated golf for most of the year, winning the Masters and U.S. Open for his first majors, finishing one shot out of a British Open playoff and being runner-up at the PGA Championship.

A form dip the past month coincided with a red-hot run by Australian Jason Day, who won four of six events, including the PGA Championship and two of the FedExCup playoff tournaments.

That stung the highly-competitive Spieth.

"I got frustrated. I missed two cuts in a row, had never done that, lost the number one ranking. I was watching Jason Day just dominate golf," he said.

A mental adjustment turned things around.

"I made some poor decisions earlier in the playoff stretch because mentally I wasn't in shape," he said. "I was approaching this number one in the world ranking, the end of the majors season, these expectations, I was managing them like a sprint."

Spieth said he put pressure on himself to do too much, instead of sticking with his game plan.

He briefly fell back into his old self-admonishing ways on Sunday, after back-to-back bogeys at five and six that dropped him level with Sweden's Henrik Stenson, when caddie Michael Greller snapped him back to attention.

"At that moment Michael kept me in it," Spieth said, revealing that he had been forbidden by Greller from talking about what had transpired.

The seeds to victory may have been planted six days earlier when Spieth and Greller arrived at East Lake on Monday ahead of most players, to work on getting comfortable on the Bermuda greens and rough.

"Compared to most other guys, they weren't out there on Monday morning," Spieth said. "I think it's important for getting to know a golf course, especially as you change grass types, change weather conditions.

"It was very, very lonely out here on that Monday, which was kind of nice."

Nice Views Of Pebble Beach's Restored 17th

I've never played Pebble but have played all the other Pebble Beach courses (Spyglass, Spanish Bay and Del Monte).

Del Monte, when green and not burnt because of the drought, is a straight forward, yet challenging course with sneaky tough greens.

Spanish Bay should have never been built. Narrow at spots, and with environmentally sensitive areas all over the place (lateral drop if you hit your ball in), it can make for a very frustrating day.

Spyglass is two different courses in one with the opening six holes followed by the closing 12. Spyglass is a tough, tough golf course.

I hear the complaint about Pebble a lot. That it is an overpriced golf course. Still, everyone wants to play it at least once. Someone did mention the NCGA deal. If you want to save some scratch, go to Pebble Beach website and check out the Duke's Membership. Cost is $345/year. Can play Spyglass (walking rate) for $210 and can take a push cart on course, Spanish Bay $150 and Del Monte for $40. The Duke's Membership will also allow you three times to play Pebble at $375 WITHOUT having to stay at the Resort, once in January, once over summer and once in the fall, but with punched/sanded greens. You can make playing the Pebble courses affordable if you join the Duke's, or go in on it with a couple of buddies to downsize the $345 upfront fee.

Personally, so many better courses in Monterey/Santa Cruz area to play. Bayonet is an absolute gem. Everyone knows about Pacific Grove. Laguna Seca is a tough track that is fun. Quail Lodge was just re-opened and is a blast as is Carmel Valley Ranch. Monterey has more courses than just Pebble. Check those out along with Seascape up in Santa Cruz and you can have a really fun couple days in Monterey.

Spieth motivated by losing to Day in recent rounds

ATLANTA No one has had a better view of Jason Days run the last few weeks than Jordan Spieth.

Spieth has been paired with Day 10 times since the U.S. Open, a run that has included four victories for the Australian.

Spieth is 2-7-1 against Day over those last 10 head-to-head meetings, including Rounds 1 and 2 last week at the BMW Championship when Day was a combined 18 under par compared to Spieths 11 under effort.

I mean he destroyed my score in those rounds, Spieth said on Wednesday at the Tour Championship.

Tour Championship: Articles, photos and videos

The duo will be reunited on Thursday at East Lake when they set out for the first round together at 2 p.m. ET. Its a sequel that Spieth has embraced.

It is very motivating, because my personality I dont like getting beat in anything and Im very stubborn, Spieth said. When its not fun it motivates me.

Spieth getting that 'major' feeling at Tour Championship (Reuters)

By Larry Fine

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Jordan Spieth experienced a slight lull to his sensational season in the last month, but the 22-year-old American has major feelings about a big finish at the Tour Championship and the $10 million FedExCup prize.

"It would be fantastic," Spieth said about the possibility of capping off his breakthrough season with a victory at East Lake on Sunday.

He was speaking after shooting a two-under 68 in the third round and taking a one-shot lead over Swede Henrik Stenson.

Spieth has won four titles this year including the Masters and U.S. Open for his first two majors.

He also finished tied for fourth, one shot out of a playoff, at the British Open and was runner-up at the PGA Championship.

"No matter what, it's a dream come true season. Two majors, a couple other wins, and what we have been able to do consistently this year, that's a huge step up from anything I've ever done," he said. "So I don't need tomorrow to justify it.

"But I'm not going to sit here and say $10 million doesn't mean anything to me, because it does."

Spieth has already collected more than $10.5 million in tour earnings this season.

"It's a fantastic bonus ... all of a sudden they just want to give us more money. So it's fine with me."

Spieth went quiet just as Jason Day caught fire. The Australian has won four of his past six tournaments, while Spieth missed the cut at the first two FedExCup playoff events.

Even so, the Texan knew he would still enter the Tour Championship with a chance to win the grand prize.

Spieth said he has matured since two years ago when he was frustrated in similar conditions at East Lake, home course of the legendary Bobby Jones, and let it affect his play.

Whatever the outcome on Sunday, 2015 has been a good year.

"The whole year it's been about the major championships, and I consider this to be the fifth one at the end.

"So, good opportunity tomorrow. I'm very motivated. It's something I want badly, and it's going to feel a lot like a major championship when I step on the first tee."
